Medal Of The Societe...
Description:This is a medal awarded to M Fox by the
SOCIETE PHILOMATHIQUE DE PARISThis Society was created on 10 December 1788 by Augustin-Francois de Silvestre, Alexandre Brogniard, Audirac, Broval, Petit and Riche. It was defined by J.-Andre Thomas, one of its members, asA high-level multidisciplinary scientific and philosophical society. One becomes a member by co-option, then by substitution vote as the number of members is limited. The Society is republican, non-secret, and fully open to knowledge, fiercely independent; it promotes authenticity, tolerance and freedom. Many great scientists belonged to the Societe: Lavoisier, Laplace, Cuvier, Gay-Lussac, Ampere, Cauchy, Fresnel, Pasteur, H. Becquerel, De Broglie, Joliot. Since 1944, the Societe has had eleven Nobel Prizes awarded to scientists among its members, and seventeen to emeritus members (including Dirac, Heisenberg, Morgan, and Planck). This illustrious rollcall is echoed on the obverse of the medal where many of these names are framed within a laurel wreath. The reverse bears the name of the society, 1788 the date of its founding; and the legend: ETUDE ET AMITIE.Bronze Dia. 42 mm Wgt 35.3 GrAll items are as pictured and have not been cleaned by me.Please email me if you require any further information or pictures. To take advantage of combined postage rates, please see my other items.
